In one of the biggest seizures of its kind in recent times, police in Guwahati arrested two people today on suspicion of transporting around 2.5 tonnes of marijuana worth an estimated Rs 15 crore.
The seizure was made within the area of Jorabat police station, on the border of Assam and Meghalaya, and was led by Guwahati’s Joint Commissioner of Police, Partha Sarathi Mahant.
The Haryana-registered truck (HR 38T 2913) was travelling from Manipur to Guwahati when it was halted. The marijana had been wrapped in 32 plastic bags that were hidden under sacks of ginger.
Two men – Ashok Kumar of Haryana and Bhupendra Singh of Uttarakhand – were arrested by the police.
