An FIR has been filed with Lumdiengjri police station over the alleged interference in the affairs of the Garikhana Masjid by an individual who is reportedly out to secure the masjid’s assets for himself.
The complaint, dated October 23, was registered by Abdul Tawab, the secretary of the masjid committee. In it he claimed that one Md Zaheer of Lower Paltan Bazar, Shillong Cantonment, has started interfering in the affairs of the masjid and harassing and threatening residents of the area.
On two separate evenings, October 19 and 21, Tawab said that Zaheer and his “hooligans” had forced residents to attend a meeting under threat of dire consequences despite it being 10pm. On October 22 “he again carried on his terror activity at late hour of night upon the tenants”, Tawab said.
The reason for all this, the complainant alleged, is that Zaheer wants to take control of the masjid’s property and the rent paid by the residents.
