The United Democratic Party (UDP) is quietly confident of a good show in Jaiñtia Hills at the upcoming state elections, party vice-president Alantry Dkhar said today.
“Right now our position is very favourable and it all depends on how we move forward in the coming months,” Dkhar said. “We have promising potential candidates.”
Yesterday, Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla of the National People’s Party, said that the NPP would emulate the UDP’s 1998 feat of winning all seven Jaiñtia Hills’ constituencies.
Asked if the battle will be between the two parties, Dkhar declined to confirm or deny it.
Of the seven seats in Jaiñtia Hills, the UDP and NPP won three each in 2018. The other was claimed by the Congress Party, though the legislator, Shitlang Pale, defected to the Trinamool Congress last year.
