The opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) could release its first list of candidates for the upcoming state election by the end of November, state party president Charles Pyngrope said today.
All of the party’s sitting MLAs will get tickets to contest the election, which must be held by March 2023.
While the party would ideally like to put up a candidate in each of the 60 seats, the TMC will be a “little selective in the process” as it only wants those who are truly capable of serving the people, he added.
There have been strong indications that one or more TMC legislators will quit the party before the polls. As of yet, however, there is still no confirmation of any defections, so the party is carrying on, the Nongthymmai MLA and former Congress Party stalwart said.
On the charge that the TMC, having its base in West Bengal, will not be able to make much headway in tribal-dominated Meghalaya, Pyngrope said, “The NPP does not have a solid ground in most constituencies, neither does the UDP nor any other political party. Considering we are just a new party, having a presence in every constituency is an indication that people are accepting us and public acceptance is growing in leaps and bounds.”
