The Dkhar clan in East Jaiñtia Hills district today said that the family of Ramesh Dkhar, one of the accused in the murder of two taxi drivers, has misused the surname and are directed not to use it in future.
According to the president of the Seiñ Kur Dkhar, Teras Dkhar the family had adopted the surname when they moved from Silchar in Assam and settled in Tongseng village in 2000. He said the family did not obtain any permission from the clan, which is against the culture.
Teras stated that the clan has verified the claims of the family and had summoned them to a meeting in which they had sought three months time to change their clan name.
It may be mentioned that Ramesh Dkhar was one of the prisoners who escaped from the Jowai jail. He was recaptured by villagers from a jungle area in Shangpung Thadmuthlong the next day, after four other escapees were lynched to death by a mob in Shangpung on September 11.
Ramesh and three others were arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder of two taxi drivers in Jaiñtia Hills. His mother, Mela Dkhar during a protest rally in Tongseng even chose to disown him and said she does not want him back.
