Nongthymmai MLA and opposition legislator Charles Pyngrope today called for a rethink by the police service into the appointment of under fire Additional Inspector General of Police GK Iangrai as commandant of the elite SF10.
Iangrai is under a cloud regarding the alleged misuse of police vehicles by him while he was in charge of police administration.
Speaking in the Assembly today, Pyngrope said that SF10 is an elite force established to counter insurgency and ensure peace and tranquility in the state but it could become tainted through association with Iangrai if the allegations against him do prove to be true.
“I feel that the police department has to rethink (the appointment) until the irregularities, if any, are cleared,” Pyngrope said, adding that there should be no loss of confidence in the force by the public because of the allegations.
“When an Additional Inspector General of Police has been accused in a scam, that sends many a shiver down all of our spines,” the MLA said.
Such irregularities raise the question as to whether issues like these were present in the past as well. This could have grave repercussions on the morale of police personnel, he warned.
