Mid-day meal workers began an indefinite sit-in here today over the failure of the government to enhance their wages.
Mid-day meal workers receive only Rs 1,000 per month and are only paid that for 10 months in a year (i.e. not during the winter holidays). The workers want Rs 5,000 per month as well as to be paid for the whole year.
Adviser to the All Jaiñtia Mid Day Meal Workers Union (AJMDMWU), Khroo L Pariat, said that the state government has been silent over the demands of the workers for a long time, even as six reminders have been submitted by the union.
The workers had also personally met Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in 2019.
