Former president of the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Wellbirth Rani, is ready to contest the upcoming 2023 state election provided the United Democratic Party (UDP) allots him a ticket.
Rani, who formally joined the UDP today along with several of his supporters, said that he leaves the decision to the wisdom of the UDP leadership.
One of the others to join the party today was veteran journalist R Monarch Shabong.
Rani said that there is a need to develop a strong regional mindset among the people and this is the reason he joined the UDP and he promised to try and strengthen the party organisation.
UDP president and Speaker of the Assembly, Metbah Lyngdoh, said that Rani joined the party more because he believes in the need to strengthen it rather than in the hope of a ticket.
