A photograph of a textbook page of Social Studies for Class III went viral on social media, as a major error was spotted in languages spoken in Meghalaya.
Under the ‘States, their Capitals and Language Spoken’ lesson the languages mentioned in the book that Meghalaya people speak are, “Bengali, Nepali and Marathi”.
The principal languages in Meghalaya are Khasi, Pnar and Garo with English as the official language of the State.
The book authored by Dr. Dhananjay Joshi and Neelam Jain was published by Bright Star Books International. 521-Vasnat Kunj, New Delhi-110070 and reportedly approved by the NCERT.
Meanwhile, the Khasi Students Union (KSU), Northern Border area has lodged an FIR at the Khanapara police station about an error in the textbook.
According to the KSU, the textbook was used by students of Little Star Senior Secondary School, 9th Mile, Baridua in Ri Bhoi district.
“The content in this book is totally wrong, which may lead to wrong knowledge gained by the students of the school,” the KSU said.
Stating that the content has affected the sentiments of the Khasi community, the union has sought legal action against the authors and the school authority.
Meanwhile, Additional Chief Secretary Education, DP Wahlang said that the private school did not use the prescribed list of textbooks approved by the State government and was asked to comply.
