An inter-ministerial team from the Central government will soon visit the flood-affected areas of Meghalaya and Assam to assess the damage.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed this in a tweet today.
Shah last week spoke to Chief Ministers of Meghalaya and Assam, Conrad Sangma and Himanta Biswa Sarma respectively to discuss the destruction caused by flood, landslide including loss of lives.
“Spoke to CM Assam @himantabiswa and CM Meghalaya @SangmaConrad to discuss the situation in parts of both states in the wake of heavy rainfall and flooding. Modi government stands firmly with the people of Assam and Meghalaya in this hour of need,” Shah tweeted.
Heavy rains in Meghalaya have triggered landslides in many areas of the State for the last few days, leaving behind a trail of destruction including the death of at least 28 people.
Most low lying areas in Garo Hills have been affected by flood and over 4000 people have been sheltered in relief camps.
A total of 822 villages have been hit by the bad weather and 5.86 lakh people affected. Over 4000 houses have been damaged – 262 fully, 95 severely and 3437 partially.
The Meghalaya government has written to the Ministry of Home Affairs and sought financial assistance amounting to Rs 300 crore for repair and reconstruction of roads and bridges destroyed by the recent floods and landslides in the State.
The road communication between Jaiñtia Hills in Meghalaya to three neighbouring states of Assam, Mizoram and Tripura has been cut off for the past three days due to collapse of the National Highway-6 in Lumshnong area of East Jaiñtia Hills and multiple landslides at many stretches.
It may be mentioned that National Highway-6 connects Meghalaya with other states like Mizoram and Tripura along with Barak Valley of Assam.
An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) will visit the flood-affected areas of Assam and Meghalaya to assess the damages. After the earlier spell of floods, an IMCT visited the affected areas of Assam from 26 May to 29 May, 2022.
