The Pynursla block committee of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has expressed its dismay at the intention of the Centre to “forcefully” extend Hindi language learning until Class 10 in the North East.
In a statement today, TMC block president Jiten Khongwieng said that he was disappointed in the Centre’s “adamant attitude” of imposing Hindi on the region.
In Meghalaya, many of the indigenous communities are not well-versed in Hindi and the state has a shortage in qualified teachers, he added.
Khongwieng said that the TMC is not opposed to the language itself but to the “approach and methodology” employed by the central government.
The block president thus called on the state government to examine the Centre’s decision before “taking any action that would put a burden on the existing curriculum.”
