Residents of Raid Nongkyrla in Ri-Bhoi are up in arms over alleged pollution caused by the nearby CMJ Breweries factory.
The local dorbar shnong has expressed its concern that the local people are being affected directly by the pollution generated at the plant in Byrnihat.
Residents claim that the factory lacks a proper chimney, with the result that the surrounding area, including homes and farmland, is affected by the air pollution generated by the brewery.
Locals complain of difficulty in breathing, coughing, irritation of the eyes and drowsiness. The black smoke emitted by the plant, they say, causes the air to be unbreathable, with a foul stench, and the particulate matter generated settles on everything around them, including clothes, household goods and crops.
Raid Nongkyrla and the dorbar shnong have written a letter of complaint to the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner seeking action against the company.
