Despite a string of defections from the Congress to the Trinamool Congress since last month, the United Democratic Party general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh, does not see the West Bengal-based party making much headway in the Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills.
“It is going to be an uphill task for the TCM and it will not have much impact here, especially in Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills,” Mawthoh told Highland Post.
Meanwhile, on the Congress party, which has suffered a crisis through all the defections, especially in Garo Hills, Mawthoh said that the “true colours” of its flighty members have been revealed.
“This party is now disintegrating rapidly and, understandably, there has been lots of internal friction and conflicts within the party. The bond between them is just superficial and not a real unity,” he stated. “Such is the nature of the leaders of the Congress Party that 12 have left and the rest have petitioned for those who left to be disqualified.”
He remarked on the irony of this as the Congress had, on several occasions in the past, pointed to a lack of unity among the regional parties, such as the UDP.
