Trinity Saioo, the founder of a women’s self-help group was today conferred the Padma Shri by President of India Ram Nath Kovind at a glittering function in Raj Bhavan.
Saioo, from Jaiñtia Hills was recognized for her work for spearheading the women-led farming movement in Meghalaya, enabling the women farmers to triple their incomes.
Saioo, who is a teacher and is also involved in farming, led 800 women in Jaiñtia Hills region by forming the Ieng Skhem Spice Society to cultivate and boost the popularity of the indigenous, high curcumin content Lakadong variety of turmeric.
Saioo was in the forefront to nudge the State Government to launch Lakadong Turmeric Mission with the objective of upscaling its production.
In October 15, 2018 Saioo was felicitated for her valuable contributions and innovative work by the Union Agriculture Ministry during the celebration of the Mahila Kisan Diwas 2018 in New Delhi. She received the award in person from the Union Minister for Agriculture, Radha Mohan Singh along with 40 other women farmers from across the country.
The Padmashri was announced last year.
