No seasoned politician worth his or her salt would join the Congress Party at the moment, Deputy Chief Minister and former Congressman Prestone Tynsong said today.
He was reacting to a recent statement by state Congress president and Shillong MP Vincent Pala that many figures from other parties are keen to switch their allegiance.
“Those who do not know exactly what the situation is within the Congress, be it in the state or at the national level, they may do so, but the rest, the seasoned politicians, I don’t think they will join Congress,” Tynsong told reporters.
The National People’s Party (NPP), who ditched the Congress in 2018, said that even the party’s national leader, Sonia Gandhi, has admitted that the Congress is a house divided.
“Even Pala said he has differences with (leader of the opposition) Mukul Sangma. So it’s very clear there is no secret anymore,” Tynsong added.
Mixing his metaphors somewhat, the Deputy CM stated that so long as the infighting takes place there will be division in the party and the moment it is divided it means the party is called a broken family and therefore a sinking ship.
“A sinking ship means you need to jump from it otherwise you will be dead,” he quipped.
