The Ri-Bhoi Students Union (RBSU) has committed itself to continue pushing for a government college for Ri-Bhoi district.
Speaking to this correspondent, RBSU president Everjoy Nongpluh said that because of the pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic, the union had put its demand on the back burner but, with the situation easing, it has decided to bring it to the fore once again.
A government-run college is the need of the hour as it will enable the poor, who cannot afford the fees charged by private institutions, to attend college.
Nongpluh also informed that the private Eastern Ri-Bhoi College had also agreed to give up its independence and become a government college and it is now the duty of the Meghalaya government to take up the issue seriously.
“RBSU will soon re-submit a memorandum to the Education Minister reminding him about the pending demand for a government college,” he said.
