Various NGOs from across Garo Hills have condoled the deaths of six people who were killed in a tragic accident which left all the other passengers injured, with two persons still missing.
Many residents of nearby Rongjeng, who rushed to the spot to help rescue efforts, said they were appalled at the fact that despite the enormity of the incident, no leaders came to the spot to see the situation for themselves. Further, other than the Chief Minister and cabinet minister James Sangma, no one even paid condolences.
“This is really bad and is not something we need to be proud of. We hope they come forward to help the victims and their families. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims at this time and we offer our condolences,” said Tuesbrail Marak, the president of AAYF, Rongjeng.
Meanwhile, Jeremiah Sangma felt that the government needed to immediately announce a package for those that died as well those that are currently struggling with their lives.
Another NGO from SGH, GSU from Nongalbibra, condoled the deaths and injuries while asking for compensation to be paid to the victims and their families.
Meanwhile the MDC from Williamnagar, Alphonsyiush Marak, has expressed shock at the fact that till now, no announcement has been made by the administration or the government for compensation.
“They were travelling in a government bus and the government needs to announce ex-gratia for the victims and help with those that are injured. I am extremely saddened that the government has not taken ownership of the tragedy and helped the families of the victims. We hope the announcement to compensate them comes quickly,” said the MDC.
