The Meghalaya People’s Labour Union (MPLU) has decided to appeal to the National Human Rights Commission and also write to the Home Ministry and Prime Minister’s office on the killing of the ex-HNLC leader, Cherishterfield Thangkhiew.
According to the union, the August 13 incident has created fear psychosis amongst the citizens of the State.
Condemning police action for allegedly shooting a sick man in the wee hours before his family, MPLU working president Shembha L Chyne today stated that Cherishterfield had already surrendered since 2018 and returned to the mainstream to lead a simple life. He was also a mediator between the State government and the HNLC for peace talks.
“If the police say that Cherishterfield was involved in IED blasts then they should have gone during the day and arrest him,” Chyne added.
The MPLU working president also stated that one of the biggest problems faced by the youth in the State at present is unemployment and this has added to their frustration.
“If the Government in other states gives its first preference to their people then why don’t the Meghalaya government do the same and assist the indigenous people not only in government jobs but beyond?” he questioned, and said if they are economically strong, good things will happen in the State.”
Furthermore, the union urged the government to take strong action against people who are trying to malign the state by branding it a terrorist state.
