CRPF personnel went berserk and indulged in stone pelting and lathicharge at Mawlai Nongkwar yesterday night.
According to local residents, glass panes in several houses from Mawlai Petrol Pump to Lad Umthlong were broken after CRPF personnel came out of their camp at Mawlai Nongkwar and pelted stones at the houses.
A Maruti van belonging to Khasi newspaper ‘U Mawphor’ was damaged and its driver suffered minor injuries during the attack by CRPF personnel.
A number of vehicles were also damaged in stone pelting in the area.
However, police said that the CRPF personnel were rushed to the area after reports of several youths burning tyres in the middle of the road and pelting stones on passing vehicles.
Police also said that a CRPF vehicle was also attacked by stone pelters prompting the personnel to use mild force to disperse the crowd.
Mawlai MLA Process T. Sawkmie who visited the area today expressed concern over the damage caused to houses by the CRPF personnel.
“I will take up this matter with the chief minister and demand immediate removal of the CRPF camp from Mawlai Nongkwar for the sake of the safety of the people,” Sawkmie said.
Meanwhile, the Assam police had advised people from the State not to travel to Shillong till curfew continues.
