After a lull of dacoity activities along National Highway 62 for some months, fresh cases of dacoity have been reported with armed gangs lurking along the road to attack and loot unaware travellers, mostly during the night.
According to reports, one vehicle, on its way towards Williamnagar carrying goods was attacked by a gang of dacoits while the wind shield of the car as well as the driver being severely beaten up. The gang of miscreants also managed to loot cash from the vehicle, two days ago between Wage Asi in North Garo Hills and Rongmil in EGH.
The place of incident is said to be bordering NGH and EGH but falls under the jurisdiction of the latter.
The matter became even more serious this evening after at least two vehicles were attacked and Rs 45,000 looted from the passengers who were also on their way to Williamnagar in East Garo Hills.
The matter was reported to the police, after the vehicle escaped from the attack at Rongjeng PS in EGH though no written complaint has been filed till the filing of this report.
Meanwhile, confirming the attacks by dacoits, police sources said that patrol parties have been dispatched to the area. However, in the absence of complaints on the attacks, police personnel have been in a quandary as despite their efforts, no concrete action can be taken against the perpetrators.
“We have been patrolling the area regularly and have been able to avoid many such actions. However, in the lack of police complaints against such acts, it is extremely difficult to catch these culprits as there is nothing against them,” said a highly placed police source from EGH.
