Urban Affairs Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar has fixed August 3 for talks with all the stakeholders concerned over the status of the State’s biggest dumping ground, Marten.
The announcement was made during his visit to the landfill today in Mawlai. “We will sit and have a proper discussion with the Seng Samla and the department concerned and decide on the steps that are to be taken on that day itself,” he said.
Dhar also stated that identification process for a new landfill is on and hoped it will work out soon.
His visit to the landfill today was made a day after the Seng Samla Mawlai Pyllun (SSMP) on Wednesday locked the gates to the dumping ground and stopped garbage trucks from entering Marten in protest against the Minister earlier failed to inspect the area, a promise he made earlier this month.
Meanwhile, SSMP president Samuel Biam said they had decided to reopen the gates to Marten after the inspection. He said that the youth body wants a long-term solution to address prombles of the landfill site and looking forward to the August meeting.
The youth organisation has been demanding the government to identify an alternative landfill site and find a long-term solution to the issues pertaining to the area.
SSMP has also demanded the government to set up a proper technology to treat the bio-medical waste at the treatment plant in Marten.
