Power Minister James K Sangma today sought to clear the air surrounding the Meghalaya Energy Efficiency Ltd (MeEEL), a state-owned company formed some months ago of which he is director.
“Energy efficiency is a very big area into which the power sector is moving towards and to give that kind of thrust and focus into it, the Power Department went ahead (with forming MeEEL) and the government had given its assent to form the MeEEL,” Sangma told reporters.
Sangma clarified that the Chairman of the MeEEL is ex-officio the minister in charge of the Power Department, in this case himself, and the Managing Director is ex-officio the Secretary of the Power Department.
“Since the MeECL (Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd) is also a stakeholder in the MeEEL, therefore the CMD (Chairman and Managing Director) of the MeECL also is a director in MeEEL,” Sangma said.
He also said that even the government of India has also come up with the Energy Efficiency Services Ltd, which was formed with a specific focus towards achieving energy efficiency in the country.
“So, in line with that we have also gone and done that in the state of Meghalaya,” Sangma added.
