Leader of the opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma, said today that decisions on the lengthy interval between the administration of the first and the second doses of the Covid-19 vaccine should be based on reason and scientific findings.
“The state government must take up this issue with the government of India. We must be realistic and we must be scientific. It cannot be based on somebody’s whims and fancies. Prevail upon the government of India to take a call, which should be guided by complete scientific interpretation and not by anybody’s individual opinion or strategy,” Dr Sangma told reporters after a Congress Legislature Party meeting today.
The government of India had recently increased the gap between the first and second dose of the vaccine from four to six weeks to between 12 and 16.
This longer gap will mean that India will have many people who received one dose of the jab but not enough of those who have received two. Although one dose does provide some protection, two offers even greater defence.
