‘Regional parties will fade away if they stick to NPP’

The Meghalaya Congress once again took a dig at the regional parties of the State, with Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Secretary Bajop Pyngrope warning them that they will lose their identity if they stick with the National People’s Party (NPP).

The NPP is the senior partner in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition.

“The identity of HSPDP and UDP is starting to fade away and I feel that the regional parties should strive hard to preserve their identity,” Pyngrope said.

Recently, Congress legislator Ampareen Lyngdoh told the regional parties to break away from the NPP and form a new government if they are unhappy with the NPP.

With regards to the moves made by the UDP to oust James Sangma as power minister, Pyngrope said that the regional outfits will not be able to make a real change while they are members of the MDA.

The Congress MDC also criticised James and his brother and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

Every portfolio James holds is full of disorder, Pyngrope said, alluding to the fact that James had once held the Home Department before being stripped of that responsibility.

The MPCC Secretary also said that blaming the Congress for the ills of the State, as the NPP has done on occasion, is not fooling anyone as the MDA has been in power for three years now.

“People had high hopes in Conrad Sangma and the NPP in 2018 but now, everywhere we go, we hear people tagging the NPP as the most-corrupt government,” he said.

Pyngrope also attacked the MDA on the Inner Line Permit, saying that the government has failed to deliver what 90 percent of the population wants and this will backfire against them.
