The campaign of the United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate in Tura, Dr Pilne A Sangma, could receive a further boost if the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA of Gambegre, Saleng Sangma, decides to throw his party’s weight behind the UDP member.

This development arose after UDP President Metbah Lyngdoh (who is also Speaker of the Assembly) paid a courtesy visit to Saleng today morning.

Lyngdoh has been hitting the campaign trail hard in Garo Hills in an effort to get his party back into the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) at the elections on April 12.

Dr Pilne has been in the running to win the seat but faces tough opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Bernard Marak, Nationalist People’s Party’s (NPP) Semford Sangma and the Congress’ Kunal Momin.

Saleng, who invited Lyngdoh to his house for breakfast, spoke on the matter of support and said he was not averse to doing so as the NCP is not fielding a candidate in Tura.

Lyngdoh is the first party leader to approach the NCP for support.

Meanwhile Lyngdoh, who was in Dengnakpara this afternoon to campaign for former MDC Kredithson Marak, said in his speech that the time had come to decide on the future of the GHADC.

Kredithson is pitched in a tough battle with the NPP and Congress.

“We have come here for our candidate Kredithson Ch Marak. It is very sad to hear lectures of leaders who cheat and lie and give promises even though it’s not possible. I am not here to make (false) promises. When our leaders go back after the elections, they should not say they have promised in a public function that roads will be made in no time. We like to keep our promises,” exhorted the Speaker while appealing for votes.

He further assured the people that given the mandate, he would ensure Kredithson would work for the betterment of the people of the area.
