Twelve labourers allegedly working without valid labour licences were detected by the Federation of Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP).
Nine of these unlicensed labourers were picked up at the construction site of a JNV school. The pressure group claimed that the workers, who have been employed at the site since February, only have the acknowledgement slip from their application for licences.
Three other non-Khasi labourers were picked up working at a petrol pump in Mawsynram. Their labour licences had reportedly expired last year.
Meanwhile, the FKJGP has alleged that the officer in charge of the Forest Department at Mawsynram, who is also the in-charge of Sohra Sub-Division, seldom comes to the Forest Ranger Office in the area, which has put the public in great difficulty. The group has demanded that a permanent officer be appointed.
