Around 200 leaders of various political parties, such as the Congress and National People’s Party (NPP) joined the United Democratic Party (UDP) in Mairang today.
The new members were inducted into the party by UDP President Metbah Lyngdoh.
Speaking at the function, Lyngdoh also said that there is need to strengthen the youth wing and women’s wing of the party in the constituency, of which he is the sitting MLA.
Lyngdoh also urged the people of the state to give the party a majority in the 60-member Assembly at the next election, which is due within two years.
Others who spoke on the occasion were S Mawlong, a former Congress leader who was with the grand old party for 30 years. There were other party bigwigs at the event, including Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein, UDP General Secretary Jemino Mawthoh and Vice-President Allantry Dkhar.
On the same day new members of the Mairang UDP circle were elected, including S Roy Ryntathiang as President, Metbah Lyngdoh as Working President, SS Syiemlieh as Vice-President and Tairos Warjri as General Secretary.
