Two men were arrested and charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on suspicion of raping a 15-year-old girl.
The two suspects, J Mawnai (26) and E Nongbsap (22) were picked up by police on the basis of an FIR filed by the father of the teenage victim. The alleged crime occurred under the jurisdiction of Mawngap Police Station.
According to the complaint, the victim was walking along the road on Monday when the two suspects dragged her into a nearby forest. She was gagged and then raped by Mawnai while the other stood by watching, the FIR said. After the assault the teen was let go whereupon she ran towards home and her cries for help were heard by some women of the village, who came to help her.
A POCSO case was registered and the victim was taken for a medical checkup.
POCSO cases are piling up in the state, with more than 300 registered in East Khasi Hills alone.
