The Ri-Bhoi District Congress Committee today inspected the transit camp, which is being constructed by the Assam government in Khanapara in a case of encroachment on Meghalaya territory.
The committee, led by its President and Nongpoh MLA, Mayralborn Syiem, and Umroi MLA, George B Lyngdoh, inspected the facilitation centre/infiltration checkpoint in Umling to take stock of the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act 2016 in the district.
The delegation was also accompanied by Mawhati MDC Charles Marngar, Nongpoh MDC Balajied Rani and other party workers of the committee.
After the inspection, they met with the Deputy Commissioner, RM Kurbah, and submitted a memorandum calling on her to take up the matter of the illegal erection of the transit camp.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Syiem said that the Congress was deeply concerned that the Assam government has forcibly encroached on the land of Meghalaya and erected the transit camp on land that falls under Raid Marwet of Hima Mylliem in Meghalaya.
“This can be proved by land documents,” Syiem said, adding that even the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has written a letter to the Chief Secretary of Assam requesting a halt to the project.
He said that the party had also inspected the facilitation centre at Umling to take stock of the implementation of Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act 2016 to stop the entry of illegal immigrants into the state.
Furthermore, the district Congress committee will soon meet Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Chief Secretary MS Rao on the matter of land encroachment in the border areas.
