In a major development for Laitkor constituency, the area which has suffered for years due to water shortages, has been sanctioned a Rs 29 crore Greater Laitkor Water Supply Scheme.

Speaking to Highland Post, Additional Chief Engineer of the Public Health Engineering Department, CR Challam, said that the formal work order for this turnkey project has already been awarded to the joint venture contractor belonging to GS Express Pvt Ltd and Samved Energy Pvt Ltd, Pune.

“We are in the final stage and now the contractor will just have to submit the drawing and design of the project before the department gives its approval to start work,” he said.

Challam informed that the scheme will provide drinking water to the residents of Laitkor via a dam where the water will be collected from the perennial source of the River Sdah, located at Wahkdiat area, and two supplementary deep tube wells will be built at Laitkor Lumheh.

Laitkor’s population, according to the 2011 census, is more than 10,000 and this scheme is projected to provide enough drinking water to the population of the area up to the year 2034, when the population is projected to hit 22,000. According to central government guidelines, new water projects should be able to provide 55 litres of water per day per head of target population.

“The Greater Laitkor Water Supply Scheme will cover the villages of Laitkor Lumheh, Laitkor Rngi, Laitkor Nonglum, and Laitkor Mawri. The scheme is set to benefit 2,500 households covering 15,000 inhabitants with safe drinking water. The scheme is aimed to be completed within two years from the date of commencement,” he informed.

He also said that the water project will be equipped with slow sand filters that are more feasible and do not need electricity, expert manpower and are more manageable and easier to maintain.
