Educationists, academics, officials of various allied departments, concerned citizens, church leaders and NGOs of Garo Hills met Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today to submit a memo on their suggestions on how to improve the education scenario in the region.
The suggestions come on the back of a consultative meeting between leaders from Garo Hills over the poor pass percentage from the five districts every year. The meeting was held on August 1 in Tura.
The forum, called ‘Education Forward 2020’, had resolved to constitute a core team to coordinate and spearhead a movement with the primary objective of revamping education, besides accessibility, equity, and affordability.
The first suggestion made by the group was the filling up of vacant School Education Officer posts in Ampati, Baghmara, Resubelpara, Tura and Williamnagar and positions of principal in various government schools.
The leaders also sought the creation of a system with a framework for better coordination and synchronization between MBOSE and other allied departments in the field of education without any conflict of interests.
The group also suggested remedial classes for schools that have zero pass percentage with the forum to act as facilitator. They believed more frequent training for primary school teachers with better participation would go a long way in furthering quality education.
“The regulatory and monitoring systems need due attention and strengthening to ensure effective management and better programme outcomes. There has been far too much asymmetry between the regulatory approaches to public and private institutions, despite having the common goals in providing quality education,” they felt.
Further the earlier system of board examination in both the primary and upper primary level as part of a regular evaluation process was also mooted.
