The District Magistrate of West Garo Hills has encouraged Nokmas, members of the public and landowners of property on which mobile phone towers have been set up to allow mobile phone companies to set up generators and other power backups to put an end to poor mobile signal in the district.
In a press release the administration said that interruptions in network coverage are “mostly due to power fluctuations and outages” and generators on the site of mobile phone towers would prevent signal failure.
The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) has also been directed to ensure uninterrupted power supply to all mobile towers “as far as possible”.
Poor network connectivity, especially in rural areas, has hurt in the treatment of Covid-19 patients, hampered online classes and disrupted the smooth functioning of government and commercial establishments, the release added.
