The A’chik Youth Council (AYC) has condemned the state government for its “joke” of an education policy and demanded that it release pending salaries of teachers in South West Garo Hills.
“The government is quick to charge teachers for the failure of students in SSLC and HSSLC exams but does not realise its own failures in providing for teachers,” AYC Ampati unit President Silnang Ch Marak said in a press release. “Teachers in South West Garo Hills are without salaries for close to four months now.”
The pressure group said that it has raised the issue through several channels but its plea remained unheard.
“The District School Education Officer does not have the financial power to release salaries of teachers. If education is a top priority for the government there should have been positive movement in this sector,” the AYC said.
Teachers have been doing their job dutifully even during the Covid-19 pandemic and need to be paid their salaries, meager as they are, Marak continued.
The AYC urged the government to provide financial powers to the DSEO within the coming week so that the teachers can be paid as early as possible.
