Tura, Sep 16 : A suspected kingpin of a kidnapping gang operating in Garo Hills was arrested today in an early morning operation near the village of Gabil Koksi, on the border between
North and East Garo Hills.
Bronson Momin and his gang were allegedly behind the kidnapping of a coal trader from Nangalbibra, South Garo Hills. The victim, Rintu Marak, was kidnapped from Rengdim in
West Khasi Hills on July 1. He was later released after a ransom was paid.
Most of the kidnappers were arrested by East Garo Hills police in the area between Rongjeng and Rongmil, though the leaders of the gang gave police the slip.
According to a release by Superintendent of Police Bruno A Sangma, Momin had gone into hiding in the densely forested jungles of Gabil Koksi and aimed to procure sophisticated arms
to expand his group.
“Based on information from sources, his movements were tracked to the area and a special team was dispatched comprising SF-10 commandoes. His hideout at Nengtek Gabil Koksi was raided and the criminal mastermind was apprehended in an early morning
operation today,” said the SP.
The operations team recovered one dummy assault rifle shaped like an AK-47, a shotgun and an air pistol, among other items.
Momin was brought to Rongjeng Police Station and will be handed over to West Khasi Hills police for further investigation into the abduction of Marak.
