Shillong, Nov 2: Three Trinamool Congress MDCs will join the National People’s Party (NPP) on Wednesday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed today.
Speaking to reporters, the CM did not reveal the names but they have been widely reported as Kharkutta MDC Cherak W Momin, Balachanda MDC Agassi R Marak and Williamnagar MDC Alphonsush R Marak.
Unlike in Parliament or state Assemblies, no anti-defection law applies to the district councils.
The defections come before the next elections to the GHADC. The current term of the council was extended in October for another six months to give adequate time to form a GHADC electoral roll. The NPP is currently the party in power in the council.
Meanwhile, when asked, Sangma said that no TMC MLAs are currently scheduled to join the NPP.
