Shillong, Nov 2: The European Union Film Festival (EUFF) will make its Shillong debut from November 12 to 18, marking the first time the festival is being held in the Northeast.
In its 31st edition, the festival will screen 21 award-winning films from 21 EU member states. It is organised by the Delegation of the European Union to India in collaboration with EU member states and in partnership with the Asian Confluence Centre.
Screenings in Shillong will be held across four venues — Asian Confluence Centre (The Habitat), Lady Keane College, St. Edmund’s College and KL Bajoria College.
The line-up includes acclaimed titles such as Rose (Austria) starring Sandra Hüller, Sirāt (Spain) by Oliver Laxe, The Richest Woman in the World (France) and A Year of School (Italy), along with entries from Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia and Slovenia.
The films explore themes of identity, belonging, gender, family, privilege and social change.
EU Ambassador to India Jean-Eric Paquet said Shillong was chosen as the starting point for its cultural vibrancy and love for storytelling. He is scheduled to visit Shillong on November 13.
Festival curator Artur Zaborski said the selection brings together diverse voices rooted in different cultures and languages.
Executive Director of Asian Confluence Centre Sabyasachi Dutta said the festival would open avenues for cultural dialogue between Europe and Northeast India.
The 2026 edition also introduces the EUFF Film Project for young Indian filmmakers. The top 10 shortlisted short films will be screened in Delhi.
After Shillong, the festival will travel to New Delhi from November 25 to December 4 and then to Pune in December.
All screenings in Shillong will be free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis with prior registration.
