Shillong, Oct 30: Meghalaya’s traditional Ryndia silk received international spotlight at Russia’s prestigious Admiralty Needle Festival, as Delhi Fashion Week presented its International Reinvent Northeast Season 9 in St. Petersburg.
Indian Fashion Director Harshit Dhingaun, Founder of Delhi Fashion Week, was conferred an international award by St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design for promoting Indian fashion and handloom heritage at the 31st edition of the festival held from October 19-22.
Leading the Delhi Fashion Week international segment, Dhingaun presented two key showcases from the Northeast — a runway presentation of Manipur’s handloom heritage by designer Lairenlakpam Lily Chanu, and a special masterclass on Meghalaya’s Ryndia silk.
The masterclass titled “India: The Land of Diversity, Ryndia – The Fabric of Peace” introduced Russian fashion students to Eri silk, its cultural significance, traditional weaving practices of Meghalaya’s indigenous communities, and its potential in sustainable contemporary design.
Ryndia, known for its ethical and sustainable production, was highlighted as a symbol of Meghalaya’s cultural identity and living textile tradition.
The Manipur showcase, titled “Threads of Manipur”, celebrated the state’s handloom legacy through a contemporary collection inspired by the Shiroi Lily.
The initiative, organisers said, demonstrates how fashion can act as cultural diplomacy, connecting Northeast India’s heritage with global audiences.
With 18 years in fashion and media, Dhingaun said the recognition marks a milestone in his effort to bring Vocal for Local and Northeast handlooms to international platforms.
