Shillong, Oct 28: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO), Ri-Bhoi District, has submitted a memorandum to the Commissioner of Transport seeking urgent establishment of a permanent weighbridge, before the newly constructed Umiam Bridge.
HITO said the weighbridge is needed to enforce the 28.5 MT permissible gross-weight limit displayed at the Umiam Bridge Bypass, which also restricts vehicle configuration, timings and articulated vehicles to protect the bridge and ensure commuter safety.
The organisation said without a weighbridge, visual inspection cannot verify actual weight of trucks carrying coal, cement, stone or sand, and overloading may stress public infrastructure, increase accident risk and cause premature deterioration of the new bridge.
Citing the Transport Department’s public notice dated May 20, 2026 on unauthorised modifications to goods vehicle bodies, HITO called for installation of a calibrated weighbridge before the bridge at a non-congesting point, mandatory weighing and action against violators, joint enforcement with district administration, police and DTO, inspection of illegal body extensions under MV Act, temporary/mobile weighing till permanent setup, and early technical and funding approvals.
