Shillong, Oct 22: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has extended full solidarity to the agitating deficit teachers of Meghalaya, accusing the state government of insensitivity and bureaucratic arrogance in handling their legitimate demands.
In a statement issued on Thursday, VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said the teachers’ agitation is a disturbing reminder of growing frustration within the teaching community over unresolved service-related grievances.
“It is deeply unfortunate that teachers, who dedicate their lives to shaping the future of our children, are compelled to resort to agitation to make the government listen,” he said.
Basaiawmoit said demands relating to CPF, DA arrears, retirement benefits and other service matters deserve serious and time-bound action, not bureaucratic excuses and empty assurances.
Launching a sharp attack on the bureaucracy, Basaiawmoit said, “The IAS is meant to serve the people, not to develop a mindset of superiority over those they are entrusted to serve. No administrative officer, regardless of rank, should treat teachers as inferior or dismiss their legitimate concerns merely because they lack bureaucratic power.”
“Teachers are the foundation of society. A government that fails to respect its teachers fails to understand the true value of education. Administrative authority must be exercised with humility, accountability and empathy,” he added.
The VPP demanded that the state government engage meaningfully with the teachers’ associations and resolve their outstanding demands without further delay.
“Teachers deserve respect, not indifference; justice, not excuses,” the statement said.
