Shillong, Oct 14: Space in the Polo parking lot and MUDA lot in Keating Road will be set aside for Assam tourist vehicles, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar informed today.
Dhar, who is in charge of the Transport Department, said that these spaces have been designated by the Meghalaya government for Assam vehicles to address complaints over buses and smaller vehicles being parked randomly across Shillong.
Dhar said the decision was finalised at a meeting with stakeholders of the Shillong Recreation Ground Trust (SRGT). Under the arrangement, smaller tourist vehicles from Assam will be allowed to park at the MUDA parking lot in Keating Road, while bigger buses will be accommodated at the SRGT parking lot in Polo.
Dhar said the move followed complaints over the haphazard parking of Assam-registered tourist vehicles over the past few months. The government had also received a request from Assam cabinet minister Atul Bora to look into the matter, along with a representation from Assam’s tourist vehicle operators.
He said the designated parking arrangement was intended to bring order to the movement of tourist vehicles in the city, particularly as most of the vehicles concerned were registered in Assam.
Meghalaya-registered vehicles already have their own designated parking spaces.
Dhar clarified that Assam-registered tourist vehicles travelling to Sohra and other destinations would remain free to travel to their intended locations, and that the parking arrangement would not restrict their movement.
