Shillong, Oct 14: A Meghalaya delegation has discovered graves of three more Garo men of the 69th Garo Labour Company at Pieta Military Cemetery in Malta.
Led by Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, the delegation paid homage to four Garo Hills men buried there. Till now, only the grave of Khew Marak (died June 15, 1918) was known.
During the visit, the team found three more — Ading Marak (died June 10, 1918), Sangjim Sangma (died June 19, 1918) and Join Marak (died June 10, 1918).
The men were part of the 69th Garo Labour Company that supported Allied operations in World War I with road construction and supply transport.
“This brings to light the sacrifice of Garo men that remained largely unknown,” Sangma said.
The delegation included Deputy Speaker Limison D. Sangma, Deputy Chief Whip Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, MTDC Chairman Marthon J. Sangma, Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma and Deputy Secretary Raja Kharpuri.
The Malta visit was part of a post-conference tour after the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference in Cape Town and was facilitated by the High Commission of India in Malta.
