Shillong, Oct 12: The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has supported the demand to make Khasi language test mandatory for all DSC posts in the Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills districts.
In a press statement today, KHNAM Working President Thomas Passah said the party opposes the demand of the All Khasi Hills Achik Joint Action Committee (AKHAJAC) seeking inclusion of Garo as an alternative qualifying language in Khasi & Jaintia Hills.
KHNAM said it supports the stand of the Hynñiewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) on the issue.
“The state has two communities – Garo and Khasi – and areas have been bifurcated to avoid future confrontation. Making Khasi mandatory in Khasi-Jaintia Hills will protect indigenous Khasi interest, while Garo should be made mandatory in Garo Hills to protect Garo interest,” Passah said.
He said seeking jobs through migration would alter district demography, adding KHNAM would not encourage Khasis to claim jobs in Garo Hills as it belongs to Garo people.
KHNAM appealed to AKHAJAC to understand the importance of boundaries and urged the government to retain Khasi compulsory in Khasi & Jaintia Hills and Garo compulsory in Garo Hills.
