Shillong, Oct 12: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has sought urgent intervention of the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education (DHTE) over non-appointment of Principal and non-payment of wages at PA Sangma Model Degree College, Darugre, Rongjeng in East Garo Hills.
In a letter to the DHTE Director through the Deputy Commissioner, the GSU said the previous principal retired on August 31, 2026 and since then essential administrative work, exam preparation and issuance of documents for scholarships have been hit.
Teaching and non-teaching staff have reportedly gone unpaid for five months, the union said.
“Students cannot be left uncertain about their examinations, scholarships, and employees cannot reasonably be expected to sustain an institution while going unpaid for months,” GSU stated, adding that the crisis raises questions on the government’s priority to higher education in rural areas.
The union demanded immediate appointment of a qualified and experienced permanent principal for at least five years, with understanding of academic administration, staff management and government procedures, and with a clear vision for institutional development.
