Shillong, Oct 7: Political parties will have their highs and lows and power is only temporary, Pynthorumkhrah MLA Alexander Laloo Hek philosophised today.
Eventually, a party in charge will face anti-incumbency and politicians should avoid vainly trying to hold on to power, he said.
His words come as his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been increasing its footprint in Meghalaya – not at the ballot box but through machinations behind the scenes that have led to several MLAs and MDCs joining the saffron party.
Asked whether the increase in BJP numbers was giving the National People’s Party (NPP) “sleepless nights”, Hek said every political party must work to keep its members together.
Hek also claimed that some NPP members are seeking to join the BJP but cannot do so at present because they do not have sufficient numbers as mandated by the anti-defection law.
On whether the NPP, which is an ally of the BJP, could learn from the BJP’s approach to power, Hek said political power was temporary and should not be treated as something permanent. Hek said political leaders needed to focus on humanity and respect for others rather than becoming attached to power.
