Shillong, Oct 6: A 26-year-old woman was stabbed in the neck allegedly by a drug addict after he snatched her mobile phone at Umkdait, Nongmensong on Monday night.
The incident occurred around 9 pm when Silvina T Sangma was returning from her workplace in Reliance Trends.
Police said the accused approached her on the road leading to Lumshyiap, snatched her phone and when she resisted, attacked her with a sickle, injuring her neck.
He tried to flee but was intercepted by locals and handed over to police.
The injured woman was taken to NEIGRIHMS, where she is undergoing treatment.
President of the Nongmensong Village Defence Party, T Thabah said the woman is a tenant in Umkdait and preliminary information suggests a group of 3-4 suspected drug addicts has been active in the area.
The accused has been identified as “Gunni”. Police are investigating.
The attack comes 15 days after a woman from Umlyngka was left bloodied near Civil Hospital gate after her gold earrings were ripped off in broad daylight.
That victim was walking from Anjalee Petrol Pump at 11:15 am on September 20 to deliver food to her ailing husband admitted at Civil Hospital when a man followed her from the petrol pump and attacked near NCC gate. A viral video showed her bleeding from the ears. Police later recovered the earrings near Indoor Stadium, Laban.
In that case, police said a medical examination indicated drug addiction and issued the accused a notice under Sec 35(3) BNSS to appear when required.
