Shillong, Oct 1: Police are preparing a detailed security and traffic management plan for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s two-day visit to the state, with around 15 companies of security personnel expected to be deployed across Shillong.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said preparations were underway at multiple locations in the city, with traffic advisories to be issued ahead of the visit to minimise inconvenience to the public.
He said the advisories would identify roads to avoid and provide information on timings of restrictions so that commuters can plan their movement accordingly.
“We will ensure that there is not much holding of vehicles,” Syiem said, adding that traffic would be stopped only for the required period during the movement of the VVIP convoy.
Shah will arrive in the city on Sunday and attend a ceremony for the presentation of the President’s Police Colour to the Meghalaya Police on Monday morning at Polo Ground.
Syiem said coordination among personnel deployed on the roads would be important to ensure smooth movement during the visit.
According to Syiem, Shah will confer the honour on the state police in recognition of its performance and service. He said Meghalaya is among the few North East states to have received the President’s Police Colour, making the occasion significant for the state police.
The event is expected to be attended by Village Defence Party (VDP) members, students and other stakeholders, besides several invited guests.
Syiem also appealed to the public to cooperate with the traffic arrangements during the visit, saying the police would try to keep restrictions to the minimum necessary while maintaining the required security protocols.
