Shillong, Sep 29: The Department of Law, NEHU, kick-started its third National Moot Court competition, with an inaugural session at Golden Jubilee Auditorium on Tuesday.
The competition has drawn 36 teams from 18 states for the three-day courtroom simulation.
Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, Justice Revati Mohite Dere, attended the event as chief guest, with Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew as guest of honour and Acting Vice Chancellor Prof S.K. Barik as chairperson.
Chief Justice Dere, in her address, called advocacy an art that needs discipline and grace. “Be brief. Be pointed,” she told students, quoting Justice Jackson on fearless yet respectful argument. She urged students to be “useful lawyers” and take up pro bono work for the poor.
“This profession is not only a means of livelihood, but a commitment to the Constitution,” she said.
Justice Thangkhiew urged students to uphold punctuality, attention to detail and integrity, warning against over-dependence on AI. “This profession always rewards persistence,” he said.
The event is supported by NEHU Moot Court Society headed by Student Convenor Martin Warjri. The preliminary rounds begin September 30.
