Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the Shillong Tech Park – II at New Shillong Township, Umsawli.
Built at a cost of Rs 121 crore, Phase-II adds 1.8 lakh sq ft of ready-to-occupy technology space – the largest single addition of dedicated IT space in the state so far. The Chief Minister said Phase-II is close to fully booked before inauguration, indicating demand for Grade-A tech space exceeds supply.
Key agreements inked during the ceremony include StaffFlex LLP, a Shillong-based BPM firm serving UK clients, Shamrock AI, a Shillong-based multinational expanding from Phase-I, Alorica, US-based multinational taking two floors in the largest single commitment, and an Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence to be hosted at the park under the IndiaAI Mission of MeitY.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the idea of an IT Park / Innovation Hub was first conceived by him in 2008 to provide an ecosystem for innovation and enterprise to thrive. “Today almost feels like a dream come true,” he said.
He noted local firms like StaffFlex and Shamrock taking space alongside multinationals proves the park is not just for external firms but a base from where Meghalaya-founded companies serve international clients.
The CM said Meghalaya is among fastest growing economies, having more than doubled its economy since 2018 with a target to double again by 2032, enabled by policy stability. Meghalaya is 54 years old and has seen 27 governments, while the present government is in its 8th year – the longest continuing government in state history.
He said a Tech Park alone cannot work without ecosystem, citing building of largest dedicated football stadium at Rs 700 crore, New Secretariat to be ready by August 2027, 10 five-star hotels in pipeline including one next to IT park, Shillong Airport runway extension to enable large commercial flights by September-October 2027, less than 20 minutes from park, and Rs 24,000 crore plus Rs 10,000 crore Shillong-Guwahati Express Highway reducing travel to under 90 minutes.
On human resource, he said 50 per cent of the population is below 20 years and only 5-6 lakh above 45 years, describing youth as tech-savvy and globally linked. Government is funding skilling through MSSDS, the first Government Engineering College established 2 years ago and a Skill University coming up in the vicinity in 1.5 to 2 years. He called for partnership with companies to tailor courses as per industry needs.
He said Shillong should become the Centre of Excellence for Northeast, BIMSTEC and Southeast Asia. “We don’t want big stories and big MoUs which are often false promises. This is real. Jobs are real. We will do few things but do them well,” he said.
Arts & Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai, Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P Ahammed and IT Department officials were present on the occasion.
