Shillong, Sep 20: Students of 13 educational institutions went vocal with their respective opinions on the impact of social media on democracy during the 27th All Shillong Dr MM Das Memorial Inter-College/Higher Secondary School Debate Competition, organised by the Zenith Jubelieth Club on Saturday.
Held at the Laban Bengalee Boys Higher Secondary School in Laban, the motion for this year’s oldest running debate competition in the city was ‘Social media does more harm than good for a healthy democracy’.
The topic evoked exchanges of innovative ideas in forceful words by 26 debaters, both for and against the motion, who cited examples from domestic and international politics to drive their points home.
The panel of judges adjudged the team from Buddha Bhanu Saraswati School as the champions of the debate competition with the St Edmund’s College team securing third place and the team from BK Bajoria taking second place.
Zenith Jubelieth Club also celebrated its 56th foundation day with talks on its myriad social welfare activities, delivered by community leaders and senior club members, besides rendition of cultural items by children of the art and dance schools run by it.
