Shillong, Sep 19: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Saturday held an internal meeting of its workers from 36 constituencies under Khasi-Jaintia Hills at the party office in Nongkrem to discuss strategy for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha bypoll.
VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said feedback from supporters across all 36 constituencies indicates strong backing for the party.
“The supporters have received proper training and explanation on the principles of the VPP and it’s hard now to change their minds,” he said, adding that supporters are not worried about the MP by-election
He said supporters want to strengthen the party for the 2028 Assembly polls “so that we can grab power.”
The VPP, founded on November 19, 2021, contested 18 seats in the 2023 Assembly polls and won four – Mawlai, North Shillong, Nongkrem and Mawryngkneng. It scored a major breakthrough when its candidate, late Dr Ricky Andrew J Syngkon, won the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.
The bypoll was necessitated after Dr Syngkon passed away on February 19, 2026, at 54 following a cardiac arrest.
